The purpose of this research is to provide additional information and insight regarding what factors contribute to a firefighter/paramedic’s ability to effectively manage difficult events that are a part of the routine work experience as a firefighter/paramedic. If you participate in this research, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire that provides information about your background; and a second that will ask you about experiences or feelings you have had within the last six months. Your participation will take approximately forty-five minutes to one hour.
Your participation in this research is strictly voluntary. You may refuse to participate at all, or choose to stop your participation at any point in the research, without fear of penalty or negative consequences of any kind. The information/data you provide for this research will be treated confidentially, and all raw data will be kept in a secured file by the researcher. Results of the research will be reported as aggregate summary data only, and no individually identifiable information will be presented.

The potential risks to participants in participating in this study are minimal. At times, some individuals may find some of the questions distressing. If the distress does not subside within a reasonable time you may contact your local area crisis service and request a referral for services or contact the researchers listed on the informed consent that will provide you with contact numbers in your area for mental health services.
There will be benefits from your participation in this research. For each set of correctly completed questionnaires by the first 100 men and the first 100 women eligible to participate in the study the sum of $10.00 will be donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation up to $2000.00. Additionally, the results of the research may contribute to work place improvements by informing agencies and governmental entities of reasonable accommodations that should be considered in order to reduce the impact of work stress on firefighter/paramedics.
